I recorded my first music audio in 2003 and it was really hard and so expensive to do that then. I had to pay a booking fee to the studio, pay the instrumentalists and the guitars, piano keyboard, and drumsets. All was done on hourly basis. These days the technology has shown us a lot of favors cost wise and quality wise too.

As you think of recording your music, you need to have these 10 important things. You may you use this as your checklist to see if you already have all you need before you get started.

1. Well Insulated Room

More obviously you need a room and have it well insulated. Why do we have an insulated room? You may be asking yourself. For good quality music that will be free from any unwanted noise, you need to record it in a quiet room that doesn’t allow any intrusion of outside noise.

Of course, you don’t want to have music that is pulled by barking dogs, passing tracks and crying or laughing kids. To avoid these noises, you must get your room well insulated to a point that it can’t allow any unwanted noise from outside. You can insulate your room using the recommended insulating materials.

2. Computer

Over 10 years ago or so we didn’t have the technology that we proudly have today. Music was recorded on tapes which weren’t easy to edit or correct. Now things are very different because we have computers that can be used to store, edit and program our music and produce it the way we want.

With a computer, you can record all your music at your pace and at your own pleasure. Direct recording of music is one of the methods you can use to record your music whereby you can have all vocals recorded live.

You can choose to program your music whereby you can record each vocal and soloist separately. In programming, you can track record each instrument and vocal at a time. The advantage is that if any instrument or vocal is faulty, it can be erased and replaced without affecting the rest.

There are many computer brands out there that you can choose from. My best choice would be apple but it is alright if you would like to use a windows computer. As we discussed in music video recording, we talked about the editing software. In recording your music, you need to have a recording software installed in your computer ready for the task ahead. The laptop is the first priority followed by the software that will allow you record and program your music as desired.

There are several good music recording software in that you can go for out there. What you can accomplish with the software lies entirely on each software’s features and specifications. If you need to get the right software, then you need to take your time and look into several Softwares before you decide to buy them.

4. Quality Headphones

In order to get the best quality music, you need quality headphones during recording. Headphones are good during recording because they assist you to listen to every sound as it is. Of course, you want to listen to every vocalist, instrumentalist, and soloist as they deliver the desired sound.

Monitors may act the same as the headphones and their purpose is to enable you to listen to your music after recorded or as in the process of recording. You may choose to use both the headphones and monitors during the process of recording or you can use one of them each at a time. 8. The Songs

Although we have talked about the kind of room, computer and instruments you need to record your music, you must realize that the most fundamental item in music is the song itself. People have no interest in the kind of equipment that you used to record your music but they have an interest in your song.

Remember that if the song is not quality, it will not accomplish its purpose despite the kind of equipment you use in recording. So as an artist, you must take time compose good and quality songs that have appropriate message to the listeners. People love music that can soothe, speak and minister to them.

9. Vocalists

In music, there are different segments which are very important. As you compose your music, think about the soloist, and other vocals. In choir songs, the soloist is the lead voice that leads the song in solo singing then other vocals join in later in music. As you write your music think about all the vocals.

In choir, other vocals include soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. If you are an individual artist you can choose to omit some vocals and only have two or three of them depending on the kind of song you are doing. It is not certain what kind vocals you must have in your songs it all depends on you and the kind of music you would like do.

10. Time


The process of recording music is a long one that requires a lot of time and dedication. It all depends on you as an individual person and if you would like to make music a career or you want to do it as a part-time job. If it’s a career then it means that you will give all your best time in this profession.

If it’s a profession, then you can compose a song, rehearse it and record it within the shortest time possible. It all depends on with your passion and if or not you have enough time to work on it or not. Time is needed in working out all our passions.

The process of composing the song, practicing, programming demands for your time.

  1. Really interesting post. I didn’t realize exactly what was required to record music at home.

    I guess that computer technology has advanced so much recently that most of this can be done at home. Is there any specialist work such as mixing that needs to be done externally or can this be done at home too? I imagine that it would be expensive to hire a specialist for this?

    • The technology has really advanced so much these days. Yes you can do everything at home provided you have your computer and have the right software installed for audio recording. On the side of the mixing, you may need to have a sound mixer which will help you balance the sound to desired quality.

      At the same time, you may need to have the instrumentals programmed for the occasion. If you cannot do all this for yourself, you definitely need to hire someone to do this which might be a little bit costly depending on each person.
