As a guitarist, one thing you should be concerned about is sound production of your guitar. Being either a professional or a beginner, you want to make sure that your guitar produces the best sound. This cannot happen without strings.

Whenever you think of purchasing guitar strings, you want to buy the best quality in terms of sound production as well as durability. This is therefore determined by the kind of material used to manufacture the strings.

Manufacturing Materials

Did you know that sound is determined by the kind of the string material? The following is the sound characteristics of the most popular string types we have in the market today.

  • Bronze Strings: Though these strings have clear and bright ton, they wear out and age faster due to bronze’s character to rust. Any exposure to oil or liquids creates room to oxidize.
  • Phosphor Bronze Strings: They are warmer and darker than bronze in appearance but their sound is still quite brittle and the phosphor material extends their life span.
  • Aluminum Bronze Strings: These type of strings produce a pronounced bass and brittle sounds with greater clarity than phosphor bronze and pure bronze strings. They are even more durable than the two.
  • Brass Strings: Normally have a brighter, tickling, metallic character both in sound production and appearance.
  • Polymer-coated Strings: They have less brightness than normal uncoated strings. They also portray good presence of warmth and  also loaded with corrosion-resistant. Some include some appealing pigments or colorants to make them more attractive.
  • Silk and Steel Strings: These strings have silk, nylon, or copper wrapped around them and this produces a softer touch and a delicate tone. They are popular with folk guitarists and finger style players.

Before I bring to you some of important acoustic guitar strings reviews, let’s first talk about how to take care of them. Purchasing the strings is not actually the big deal, you need to know how to maintain them appropriately.

Tips on Maintaining Guitar Strings

As we discussed above, bronze strings have relatively shorter life compared to the rest because once they are exposed to oily, acidic sweaty hands they will tend to oxidize and rust. When strings get that sticky waxy layer of dirt on them they won’t actually produce the right sound as expected.

Since the desire of every guitarist is to get bright and clear tone from the guitar,  you will keep on replacing the strings now and then. Supposing you play your guitar long hours and each week you are changing the strings, isn’t that going to be too expensive for you?

To avoid that why can’t you prolong the life of the strings that you have now instead of replacing them? Or which is cheaper for you? To replace strings every week or maintaining the ones you have and prolong life upto two months? It all depends on you but personally I would choose proper maintenance.

Here are some sample steps you can take to maximize the life of your strings

3 Major Steps To Maximize The Guitar Strings Life

  • Sanitize Your Hands

For longer life on your strings, it’s good to sanitize your hands before you begin playing your guitar. You can just buy a sanitize anywhere and always put one or two drops on your hands then rub them together.

This is good because it not only kills germs that may be found in your hands but also softens the fingers for easy handling of the strings. You may wonder why I don’t recommend washing your hands with soap and I will tell you the reason here. Soap may make your hands more dry after they dry as opposed to sanizers.

  • Clean Strings After Playing

After you finish playing your guitar, make sure to wipe the strings with a dry piece of cloth. You can use either a washing dish towel or a cotton diaper to clean the strings of any sweat or oils that may be left lying on them.

During cleaning, make sure to wrap the cloth all around every string and all the way along its length. If you do it the right way, you should see the dirt on the cleaning towel.

To give your strings more life and health, you may need to use a string cleaner and lubricant. There are many of them out there but I have made a recommendation below for you.

  • Change the Strings

Finally, If you do the all the above and still you can’t get good results from your strings, you may need to change your strings. Changing strings gives the new taste and sound to your guitar and you may find that this exactly what you need to do.

Worn out strings can’t give that clear original sound of strings despite how best you clean, maintain, lubricate or tune them. There are stringing tools available you can use them. You can also use string winder and cutter when changing the strings.
